In the initial lesson of Week 9, the focus is on the digraph and the phonemes /ee/ and /e/. The objective is to familiarise the children with the different sounds that the digraph can represent. The lesson starts with a revisiting activity called Quickdash, where children rapidly identify phonemes from previously learnt grapheme flashcards, including digraphs and trigraphs, enhancing their recall and speed of recognition.
The teaching segment involves writing the digraph prominently on the board and engaging the children in a discussion about the possible phonemes it can represent, using the examples of 'bead' and 'bread'. Visual aids such as the Eagle and Egg pictophones are displayed to reinforce the phonemes. During the practice part of the lesson, the children participate in a Word Sort activity, decoding words and sorting them into the correct columns based on the day's pictophones. Words like 'sea', 'bread', and 'meat' are used for this exercise. The application of the lesson is twofold: children use the Sound Gangplank resource to match words to corresponding pictures, and they also engage in Mini Whiteboard Work, where they write dictated words or sentences, such as "The mean beast is dead," to apply their understanding of the phonemes in context.
